Wayne County Sheriff Robert Milby spoke about the upcoming solar eclipse and how to prepare for it.

  • April 8is the date of the full solar eclipse. Preparedness will be key. 
  • This is a 5 day event - people will start arriving April 5th.
  • 350,000 to 500,000 are expected to visit the Rochester area.
  • 50,000 in Wayne County
  • In 2017 the  solar eclipse resulted in traffic congestions lasting at least 13 hours. All interstate routes were jammed up.
  • People will be traveling from the south and east - looking for areas with low light pollution
  • Totality will end 3:34 pm
  • Challenges - NCAA championship is the same day. If the sky is clear we have no idea how many people will be here.
Prepare:  
  • fill your gas tank
  • have food supplies
  • avoid scheduling appointments
  • make sure you have enough cash
  • cell towers may be overloaded
  • do you have access to a land line
  • Sign up for smart 911 - download the app. 
  • have an emergency response plan like the “yellow dot” program
In Wayne County we are expecting:
  • stranded motorists
  • disrupted WATS service
  • disrupted shirt changes
  • viewers stopped on roadways
  • cell tower overload
Wayne County schools are closed, county offices will be closed at noon, many private businesses are closing, Sheriff Office and Police Departments are constantly updated.
 
Sheriff’s office:
  • all personnel will be working, all leave has been canceled
  • post coverage for the county will remain intact - operate at higher concentration
  • quick response teams strategically placed throughout the county
  • Marine assets will be placed throughout the shoreline
  • Traffic will be monitored by County Highway at areas of concern
  • Sodus Point will be handled like 4th of July
  • Barrier placements on North South Roads for traffic control for exodus
  • ATV placed throughout county
  • Drones to monitor from above
  • EMO will be activated manned by several stakeholders
  • working with 911 to prioritize calls
